Hoopers Architects has had a long term relationship with the Roman Catholic Diocese of East Anglia since 2007 and in that time delivered over 80 different projects ranging from tiny refurbishments to new classrooms and large-scale masterplans. In recent years Hoopers has completed a series of interesting standalone buildings including a three storey sixth from in Ipswich, a new primary school assembly hall in Newmarket, and a Special Education Needs (SEN) facility in Bury St Edmunds.

This time Hoopers were commissioned to return to St Benedict’s High School in Bury St Edmund’s in Suffolk, following some extensive school mapping work to find a space for new Science Classrooms.

The approach is based on a two storey brick box with a science lab on each floor and a stained green wooden circulation module at the front of the school. The circulation module is designed with ‘board on board’ vertical cladding to house an uninsulated covered external stair, lift core, balcony at first floor and ground floor internal WC and lobby space. The raking facade of the staircase and lift core defines the school boundary with a new sliding gate access, removing the existing weld mesh fences and gates. It’s a steel and glulam structural frame, concrete stair, and natural oak capping pieces.

Thermowood cladding from Mill Works with natural oil woodstain finish by Osmo Uk and linear bricks by Ibstock all put together by the local main contractor Seamans Building from neighbouring village Thurston, Suffolk.
